What do You Do When Spirit Doesn’t Speak English?

One of my mediumship students just asked me a REALLY interesting question.

She was preparing to give a reading to a client that wanted to connect with her dad in heaven. The problem: Her client’s dad was Portuguese and never spoke English.  And the medium doesn’t speak Portuguese.

Her client asked,  “How are you going to communicate with my dad if you don’t speak Portuguese?”

I live in a town with a large Portuguese community and my clients ask me this question all the time.  It’s a GREAT question!

what do I do when the spirit I want to connect with didn't speak English?

First off, I do know a little Portuguese because of my Vovoa (Portuguese grandmother).  I know the words “egg head”, “silly girl”, and “sit down”.  How I know those three distinct phrases is a story for another day.

It doesn’t matter, anyway.

Whether you are fluent in a language or not, you – as the medium – will NOT be limited to connecting with Spirits that only speak your language.

Why?  Because Spirit communication is universal.  It’s a “language” based on vibration and telepathy, not the spoken word.

So relax.  You don’t need to sign up for that Rosetta Stone course just yet! :)

Spirit Communication is Universal

I like to think of Spirit as speaking in a “universal” language.

Remember, when we communicate with Spirit it’s MUCH different than having a conversation with someone who is on the earth plane.

Spirit communication is not limited to language.  Think of it as more about communicating and less about only talking.  We can communicate in numerous ways!

Those in heaven will communicate with you via:

  • Feelings, both physical and emotional.  For example, as the medium, you may feel a twinge or tingle in your chest if someone passed of a heart attack.  You may get a sense of their emotional well being, too, or a sense of their personality.
  • Sight.  Also known as clairvoyance, Spirit may give you images and moving pictures in your mind to communicate with you.  If clairvoyance is your main intuitive gift, they may show you themselves with their hands on their chest to indicate heart trouble.
  • Download of information.  Known as claircognizance, you may just know something about this loved one in Spirit.  It may feel like you suddenly were imprinted with information, such as what this person in Spirit did for a living, or how many children they had.
  • Spirit communication is telepathic.  In most cases, connecting with Spirit is going to be a telepathic sort of communication.  You probably won’t be hearing a booming voice of Spirit.  It’s mostly subtle and in your head.  Though I have heard a few German and Russian words from Spirit (mostly names), my Guides do a wonderful job of helping “translate” everything in a way that I can understand.  Yours will, too.  That way, you can focus on your most important job – passing on messages and being of service to your client.

Communicating with Spirit can feel like playing the game charades.  You can learn to have a two-way communication with them, but it’s ENTIRELY different than communicating with the living.

If you have a client whose loved one in heaven doesn’t speak the same language as you, no worries.  Remember, all those in Spirit speak the language of love – and that’s something we can all understand.
