Psychic self defense is a vital part of training for those who want to become professional intuitives, mediums, or tarot card readers.
I didn’t learn about it until well after one of the first mediumship circles I ever sat in – which literally left me shaking in my sandals because the energy was SO intense.
These simple techniques below will help you from feeling drained or shaking in your Birkenstocks.

What is Psychic Self Defense?
Did you ever notice that after you do psychic development exercises or give a practice reading, you feel so drained that you want to fling yourself on top of your Tempurpedic mattress and sleep for hours?
Or maybe you want to binge on the latest season of Game of Thrones, but there is so much energy running through you that you can’t concentrate?
Psychic self defense helps you avoid these feelings. It’s a way of grounding and centering yourself so that you don’t get drained by being “open” to, or working with, energy.

What I Don’t Mean By Psychic Self Defense
When I talk about psychic self defense, I don’t mean protecting yourself from evil spirits.
I don’t mean making sure that a spooky ghosty doesn’t get inside of you and make your head spin around. I don’t mean taking on the energy of others who have yucky vibes.
I mean, simple tools to ensure you keep your energy fields happy and healthy so you can give your best readings without feeling pooped and irritable afterwards.
Oh, and how about psychic vampires that make you feel drained in general? We’ll talk about them in a minute!
Psychic Self Defense Techniques
1. Get physical
One healthy way to ground yourself after giving a reading is to move your body. You don’t have to swim laps or pump iron.
- Dancing around the house
- Walking the dog
- Running the vacuum with gusto!
The goal is just to connect with your physical body while expending any excess energy.
The best grounding technique for me personally is to wash the dishes (boring, I know) and eat a meal (less boring for sure!).
Tip: Yoga is a wonderful way to get centered or grounded. It’s a beautiful physical-spiritual connection.
2. Take a salt bath
Salts contain lots of yummy natural healing properties and water is cleansing, so you can’t go wrong with a salt bath as part of your psychic self defense arsenal! Plus, it smells divine!
You can use Hawaiian salt, sea salt or Himalayan salt (which I adore).
- Pour a cup of salts into warm bathwater
- Lay back and soak for 20-30 minutes. Voila!
Tip: No tub or time? Use an all-natural salt scrub in the shower.
3. Wear crystals
Smoky Quartz, Jasper or Black or Blue Kyanite are all great crystals for grounding. You can carry one in your pocket or make jewelry out of them. It’s easy to make earrings, necklaces and bracelets by getting some crystals and then visiting a craft store.
Tip: Being creative is great for raising your vibrations if it’s fun for you. So give making some of your own original crystal jewelry a try!
4. Have a snack
Some light workers avoid eating before readings because it makes them feel weighed down. But everyone is different. I find it necessary to eat light about an hour before giving a reading, and eat a full meal after giving readings.
Fresh fruits and veggies are high vibrational foods that will help ground you with the Earth. Whole foods are awesome to snack on before doing psychic development work or readings.
5. Commune with Nature
There are few better ways to get and stay grounded than to commune with Nature. You don’t have to live in a rural area, either.
If you are an urban dweller, take a walk in a nearby park. You could lay in the grass.
Standing, lying and walking on the Earth has healing, grounding effects. If it’s safe, try standing in the grass with your shoes off. Go ahead. Get those toes a little dirty!
You may think that I recommend meditation for everything…and you’d be right. It’s one of my favorite ways to spend time, whether I’m preparing for psychic work or just…well, living.
Lots of lightworkers use meditation for grounding, and that’s wonderful. Personally, I LOVE it for getting centered PRIOR to a reading.
To me, it’s essential to clear my mind, set the intention that the reading will be for the highest and best good of my client, and connect with my Spirit Guides.
Meditation is a time of solitude and of going inward, and it’s awesome for centering or grounding.
Just sit up nice and tall in a chair and close your eyes. Now, imagine that the bottoms of your feet are growing roots like a tree. Imagine and feel them growing deep into the Earth, becoming one with Her.
Simple, yet effective psychic self defense!
What to do About Psychic Vampires
Psychic vampires can be anybody – our friends, neighbors, family members, or clients. They’re not out to suck our blood like Dracula, rather:
They are usually doing the best they know how to live their lives – they just have a negative attitude or communicate in a way that can seem harsh or quarrelsome.
It’s important, I think, to be aware of those in our lives who drain us, without blame. They are dealing with their own “stuff” and when we use our psychic self-defense strategies, we can still enjoy their company and not feel stressed out.
Plus, once you get used to using your psychic self-defense techniques, your positive vibes will rub off on them!
Psychic self defense techniques to help psychic vampires from zapping your energy:
- Imagine yourself surrounded with white light
Super. Simple. Imagine surrounding yourself with a gorgeous white light. Don’t just cover your body – extend the light out about three feet around your body to protect your aura.
Get into the habit of surrounding yourself with white light every day. You can surround your loved ones with it, too.
- Imagine surrounding the other person with pink light
I’ve used this method with outstanding results, especially with negative family members whom I can’t avoid. When someone is being negative or snarky, I just imagine showering them with a warm pink light of love :) It keeps me calm and I don’t get drained.
- Raise your vibration
The happier you are, the higher your vibration will be, and the less effect psychic vampires will have on you. There are a bazillion ways to raise your vibration. Basically, anything that you feel passionate about, that relaxes you, or brings you joy will raise your vibration. So get out the needlework, take a joy ride, or hop on the phone with your bestie.
As you can see, psychic self defense is easy peasy. The more you practice these techniques, the more they will become the “norm” for you – and the less the energy of others will affect you. Lots of love on your journey!
